Introduction

I am a Portuguese revert to Islam who discovered the faith through study, reflection, and a growing sense of clarity about life and purpose. As I learned more about Islam, I also began to recognise how many stereotypes, misunderstandings, and forms of quiet slander exist in our society. These misconceptions often shape the way Muslims are seen and spoken about, especially in public conversations and the media. Through my writing, I hope to offer a clearer and more honest picture of Islam, while reflecting on identity, community, and what it means to be both Portuguese and Muslim today.

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَاكُم مِّنْ ذَكَرٍ وَأُنثَىٰ وَجَعَلْنَاكُمْ شُعُوبًا وَقَبَائِلَ لِتَعَارَفُوا ۚ إِنَّ أَكْرَمَكُمْ عِندَ اللَّهِ أَتْقَاكُمْ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلِيمٌ خَبِيرٌ

“Ó humanidade, Nós vos criámos de um homem e de uma mulher, e fizemos de vós povos e tribos para que vos conheçais uns aos outros. Por certo, o mais nobre entre vós, diante de Allah, é o mais piedoso. E Allah é Onisciente e Perfeito Conhecedor.”
